Oklong village in Senapati District to host sporting extravaganza

Dimapur, November 20 (MExN): The oldest Zeliangrong village and one of the historical hamlets, Oklong village in Senapati District is set to host the 10 days sporting extravaganza of the Liangmei tribe from January 11 to January 20. This has been announced by the President of Liangmai sports Association, Dara Newmai and Vice president Stephen Chawang of its central Executive committee at the capital in Imphal.It was mentioned that the prizes for the championship will be Rs1, 00000; first runners up Rs 50,000 and the third prize would be Rs 30,000.
Young sportsperson from Assam, Manipur and Nagaland drawn from the Zeliangrong tribe will participate in the sports meet which is held every three years. To mark the occasion in a very nostalgic way, good members of football has been brought from Real Madrid Club (Spain) for the Oklong LSA Meet 2012 by Domini Chawang in his recent trip to Spain. It was handed over to President of Liangmai Sports Association, Dara Newmai and programme Convenor CH. Parang Chawang in a simple ceremony at Imphal hotel. To elicit positive response from the Liangmai people settled across the states of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland, the central executive committee of LSA had been mobilizing the people and to many, the sports meet would be some sort of a home coming, as Oklong is the oldest Zeliangrong village.This will be the first gathering of Liangmai Tribe after their eventual separation from the mother village. And many had responded to the open invitation both from the Zeliangrong community and the other tribes for the event.
The Zeliangrong tribe consisting of the Zeliang, Liangmai and Rongmei settled at Oklong after their dispersal from Mekhel village, making Oklong village one of the biggest settlements with 7777 houses at one point of time, as per Zeliangrong folklore. To commemorate their first settlement with 7777 houses, the highest scorer for the event would be awarded Rs 7,777.
Apart from sports cultural shows and musical nights will be staged during the event with the opening ceremony scheduled for January 11 after the delegates arrive on January 10. A rock concert will follow on January 14 and cultural extravaganza will be staged on January 15. The sports meet will wind up on January 20 and departure will be on January 21.
The primary objective of the sports meet is to create a sense of togetherness and belongingness amongst the Zeliangrong people in general and the Liangmai community in particular. Unity will be the clarion call.
