Older persons urged to share wisdom with younger generation

Dimapur, October 1 (MExN): International Day of Older Persons was celebrated across Nagaland on October 1.   Kiphire: The Department of Social Welfare celebrated the day under the theme ‘Stepping into the future’ at Longmatra Town in Kiphire district with James Khulu, SDO (C) Kiphire HQ as chief guest.  

Khulu shared about various programmes and policies of the government available for the benefit of older persons. Appreciating the role of older persons in the society, the chief guest acknowledged that with age there is wisdom and if there is wisdom there is peace and progress in society. In this context, he appealed to the older persons to show the right path to the confused younger generation.  

Khulu also requested them to pass on the rich tradition and legacy of truth, honesty and integrity to the younger generation so that the society we live in becomes just society. They were further urged to show the right path especially during election by practicing clean election.  

The chief guest also acknowledged the older persons in male and female category by way of handing over cash and kind which was arranged by the department.  

Z. Tsangkhuju, DWO in charge, who gave a keynote address shared on the schemes available for older persons in the department and also the history of the day. He appealed to the gathering to take good care of one’s health through regular health check up, balanced diet, daily exercise so that one lives a healthy life, free from sickness. He also asked the older persons to give back to the community by sharing folk songs, folk stories and indigenous knowledge.  

Tetsangmong, Head GB, who welcomed the gathering, expressed gratitude to the department for organising such a program for older persons in the town.  

Dimapur: The Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) visited the elderly at the home run by the Missionaries of Charity at Notun Bosti, Dimapur today. The team was led by Ajongba Imchen, Secretary, DDLSA and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dimapur. In a short interaction, Zuchumpeni, Panel Advocate, DDLDA, spoke on the various schemes and welfare provisions for parents and senior citizens. Some of the senior citizens also spoke of their experiences at the home, informed a press release. Ajongba Imchen while interacting with the staffs and inmates assured that the DDLSA will make a serious effort to address any problems faced by the home through its Front Office located at the District Court premises.  

Zunheboto: The day was observed at Youth Hall, Zunheboto, organized by Nagaland Senior Citizens Forum Zunheboto District Unit (NSCFZDU) in collaboration with Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority and Social Welfare department. Executive Engineer, PHED, Zunheboto, Er. Kitoshe Aye, who was the chief guest, stated the contributions made by older persons in the society are immense and legendary. He also said behind every success there is always an experienced and elderly person. CDPO Zunheboto, Hovishe Sema spoke on the relationship between older and the younger generation, while Easter spoke on the legal rights of senior citizens. This year, the NSCFZDU Senior Citizen’s Award was given to K. Yevihe Chishi (85 years) and Luholi Zhimo (83 years). They received certificate and gift hampers from NSCFZDU and cash award from Social Welfare Department Zunheboto.

Mokokchung: Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) team visited the Old Age Recreational Morung at Ungma Village in observance of the International Day of Older Persons. During an interaction, the team learned that the Recreational Morung was constructed by the village council for the male elderly persons above 80 years of age to make them stay connected among themselves, informed a press release. The surviving 15 elders were between the ages of 82-93 years. They come together twice a week to make baskets and sell for their management.  

Panel Lawyer MDLSA Sentinaro highlighted to the older people their rights and benefit. She also thanked the senior citizens for sharing their knowledge, experience and wisdom. In another programme, organized by social welfare department Mokokchung, I. Imkong Jamir, Retainer Lawyer highlighted the rights and benefits for the parents and senior citizens.  

Wokha: Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA) organized the international celebration at Longsa Cultural Hall. Panel Lawyer WDLSA, Meribemo Lotha spoke on Welfare Schemes - National Social Assistance Program, while Panel Lawyer, Renbonthung Tsanglao spoke on NALSA (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme 2016. Panel Lawyer WDLSA, M. Gracy Ezung also highlighted WDLSA roles and functions and spoke on various legal provisions for senior citizens.
