Addressing a meeting of Ombudsmen, Project Director of Nagaland and RD officials at Hotel Japfu Kohima, the Parliamentary Secretary pointed out that a number of problems are arising with regard to the implementation of the National Flagship Programme of NREGA all over the country where Nagaland is no exception. Pangnyu Phom informed that the Government of India has decided to appoint Ombudsmen to help the department and to work with the Project Directors, Block Development Officers and villagers as per the guidelines. He further informed that representatives from the Government of India were invited whereby the Ombudsmen of the 11 districts were appointed under their direction initially for 1 to 2 years.
Commissioner & Secretary RD, V. Sakhrie who chaired the meeting remarked that appointment of Ombudsmen in Nagaland has been to the satisfaction of the representatives from the Government of India as it was one of the best selections done, comprising of eminent personalities from various backgrounds including Advocates, NGOs and Rtd. Government officials.
Director RD, Metsubo Jamir welcomed the newly appointed Ombudsmen drawn from varied background and was optimistic that the various complaints with regard to VDBs, VCs and Department would be resolved once the Ombudsmen mechanism is set in place. There is nothing like having an independent organisation between the public and the department and the appointment of Ombudsmen would go a long way in resolving the various problems and issues, Metsubo observed. He also said that there is no issue with regard to implementation as funds are credited directly in the VDB account. Jamir also suggested to the Ombudsmen to be actively involved with the RTI issues and also requested them to work closely together for the benefit of the rural people.
