One AR personnel arrested with Opium

  Kohima, April 10 (MExN): Kohima Police manning Phesama check gate on April 9 arrested a personnel of the Assam Rifles for possession of opium.   According to a press release from the Kohima Police PRO, the arrest was made at around 9:00 pm on Sunday during routine checking and frisking. The individual, identified as Nathu Ram (32 yrs) – a Havildar with the ‘F’ Coy, 21 Assam Rifles, was intercepted from one Dimapur bound Tata Winger.   “During the course of checking one passenger was acting in suspicious manner and on enquiring, the passenger identified himself as an Assam Rifles personnel. Initial attempt to check the luggage was denied claiming that police cannot check Armed Force personnel,” the release informed.   However, since there has been instances where Armed Forces personnel have been involved in smuggling narcotics drugs in the past, the police personnel proceeded to check the luggage of the suspect and recovered suspected Opium (latex) weighing approximately 975 grams, the release added.   The contraband opium was found neatly packed in 2 Everyday milk packets and 8 Golden Tobacco packets when recovered by the police personnel.   The arrested individual was taken into police custody and a criminal case under the NDPS Act has been registered for conducting further investigation.
