A 20 year-old youth was arrested by the police in connection to the rape of a 5 year-old girl. The incident, which attracted widespread public condemnation, occurred on July 9 in a village in Kohima district.
The accused was a college student, identified as one Vilie alias Avilie Mere (20 years), who was arrested from the same village where the rape occurred. A press release from the Kohima Police informed that the arrested individual has admitted to the commission of the crime. In this connection, the criminal investigation is still in progress, it added.
The Eastern Nagaland People's Union Kohima (ENPUK), while lauding the police for arresting the accused, demanded swift and befitting justice as per the law. In a press release, it further appreciated the cooperation rendered by the civil organisations and village authority of the village, where the incident occurred for “providing all the logistic support not only in arresting the culprit but also providing security upon the victim and her family.”
According to the ENPUK, on the day of the incident, the child was initially reported missing. A search was launched with the help of relatives and neighbours during which she was found in a state of trauma. It said, “The parents found the child crying bruised and weak unable to walk and on reaching home it was confirmed that their 5 (five) years old daughter was cruelly raped.” An FIR was subsequently lodged, while the Yimkhiung Union Kohima, ENPUK and Eastern Nagaland Women Organization, Kohima Unit, took measures to ensure the police did its job without obstruction.
