An alleged drug peddler was apprehended and a banned substance seized during a house-to-house checking operation conducted by the Lotha Youth Hoho (LYH) across Wokha town on May 1, as part of its drive to enforce a drug-free district.

The suspect, identified as Sukumo, was found in possession of a substance locally referred to as “Sunflower drug” during the operation, in which around 20 suspected houses were inspected. No illegal substances were recovered from the other premises searched. During questioning, Sukumo allegedly admitted that the supply had been sourced from Mao Gate, the LYH said.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with several civil society organisations, including the Lotha Students' Union, Wokha Village Youth Organisation, Longsa Youth, and Niro Range Youth, among others. The drive follows an LYH circular declaring Wokha a drug-free district with effect from May 1, imposing a complete ban on the sale, possession, and distribution of illegal drugs and narcotic substances within its jurisdiction.

Under the resolution, individuals found involved in drug peddling will be barred from Wokha district for a period of five years. The organisation warned that strict measures, including fines and expulsion, would be enforced against violators. The LYH further stated that surprise checking drives and patrols would continue in coordination with law enforcement agencies to curb drug abuse and maintain public safety.
