One killed by wild elephants in Wokha district

DC issues advisory

Wokha, November 5 (MExN): One person was reportedly killed by wild elephants at Amboto New village under Changpang circle of Bhandari sub-division, Wokha district on November 5.

According to a report from the state DIPR, the EAC Changpang N Nuhuta Tunyi had submitted a report in regard to elephants at Amboto village and stated that some wild elephants roaming in the forest under Changpang circle “turned rogue and attacked some people and killed one (1) person” on November 5.

The EAC further informed that necessary instructions have been issued to the village authorities and leaders to exercise caution and keep clear from antagonizing or provocating the wild elephants and to remain vigil and keep updating on the matter, the report stated.

Staff from Wildlife Crime Control Unit will be visiting the affected area very soon to take stock of the situation and carry out certain field exercises to map the entire area of conflict (human and elephant conflict) to make or take mitigate measures, it added.

Meanwhile, Wokha Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Ranjan is also said to have issued an advisory stating that any attempt to ward or chase off the wild elephants through provocative means such as firing or use of any weapons or crowds are likely to cause aggressive response from the wild elephants.

Stating that such actions would aggravate the risk/threat to life and property, the DC advised the public and neighbouring villages not to resort to any provocative or aggressive means to chase off the animals, the DIPR stated.
