‘One member, one free surgery’

Nagaland observes National Bone and Joint Day

Joining the rest of Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), the Kohima Orthopaedic Society (KOS) today observed National Bone and Joint Day under the theme ‘One member, one free surgery’ at Naga Hospital Authority (NHAK), Kohima.  

The Union Ministry of Health has decided to observe such a day to focus on treatment related issues concerning bones and joints following a request from the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), which stressed the need to create awareness among people on the growing problems related to bones and joints.  

Briefing media persons, Dr. Gwalozou Thong said every year, August 4 is being observed as the National Bone and Joint Day. Every life member, attached to the Indian Orthopedic Association, has taken a pledge to perform at least one free surgery for a deserving patient to mark the day.   Dr. Thong said this year it has decided to conduct free surgeries from August 3 to 5 for the economically weaker sections of the society.  

“We have performed 3 free surgeries today and two major free surgeries will be done by tomorrow,” he added. Dr. Thong informed that IOA is one of the largest Academy Professional Organizations of doctors, consisting of nearly 12,000 life members from the length and breadth of India spanning across 22 states and hundreds of cities and thousands of districts. The Association has completed 60 years of its existence since its inception in 1955 and is a pivotal body for streamlining academics and research, as well as social networking among orthopaedic surgeons and is recognized all over the world.  

Dr Kehoustuo Kuotsu, Orthopaedic NHAK said this year the theme "One member, one free surgery" has been adopted and it has been conducting free surgeries from August 3 till August 5. Being the first of its kind, the IOA aims to create an opportunity to benefit thousands of people from the poor or lower socio economic strata through this initiative.   Orthopaedic doctors from Nagaland, namely Dr. Neikhrielie Khimiao, Dr. Gwalozou Thong, Dr. Kehousetuo Kuotsu, Dr. Visietsolie Vupru and Dr. Neilakuo Kire of Kohima Orthopaedic Society are providing the services in commemoration of National Bone and Joint Day and participated in the World Record Free Orthopaedic Surgery.
