One sentenced to 25 years for rape of minor students

DIMAPUR, JULY 1 (MExN):  The Special Judge of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Court in Tuensang, Longshithung Ezung, has sentenced one Namang Chang to a total of 25 years in prison for sexually molesting and raping three of his minor students. The verdict was delivered on April 20.

Namang Chang, the accused, was a warden at the Sochum (Study Centre) in L-Khel Tuensang where the acts took place. The court found him guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the POCSO Act.

"The accused was sentenced to undergo 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), five years of simple imprisonment (SI), and a fine of Rs. 30,000," informed a press release from Kenile Kent, the Special Public Prosecutor who led the prosecution. The specific charges included sections 376(3), 376(2)(d)(f) of the IPC, read with sections 5(f)(i)(o) and 9(f)(i)(o) of the POCSO Act.

Judge Ezung ordered that the periods of imprisonment run consecutively, amounting to a total of 25 years. "This judgement underscores the commitment of our judicial system to deliver justice to the victims of such grave offences," said the press release. The investigation of the case was carried out by ASI Chilliam.
