He acknowledged the visionary leadership of Dr SC Jamir, whose leadership gave birth to the institution. He said that Nagaland has grown leaps and bounds and that the growth of Nagaland would not have been possible without institutions like the SHGSS. He also congratulated the principal and faculty of SGHSS for being able to mentor the young minds for the future.
“We have to really know with all of our heart that education is through empowerment. Ao people in particular are lacking behind because education is no more a moral responsibility of our leaders. Empowerment of the people can only and only be achieved in the 21 century by the right knowledge imparted to the future generations,” he said.
He further added that Nagaland should not be a land of bandhs and agitation and that we do not want development at the cost of losing our indigenous traditions. “If we accommodate indigenous heritage as a lifestyle, we will be able to survive in the midst of globalization. We are afraid because we are not knowledgeable. Our defendant is God and our indigenous heritage”, he added.
Short speeches were also given by Sharingain Longkumer, Deputy Speaker, NLA and Alemtoshi Imsong, Chairman, Ungma Village Council. Sharingain Longkumer in his speech said that SGHSS established in 1972 is perhaps the only higher secondary school in Nagaland in the village level. He added that the school was established in recognition and acknowledgement to Senayangba, father of Dr. S. C. Jamir.
He said that the vision of the pioneers of the school lives till today through the motto of the school “Nucleas of education” and that itb was his prayer and wish that the students will live true to the motto of the school.
He also said that a school institution is not a business institution rather a social business where the social obligation is directed towards each and every student. It is the social responsibility to mould the students to become knowledgeable, responsible citizens and informative citizens of Nagaland.
Lakhi Longkumer, Principal, SGHSS, pronounced the vote of thanks at the end of the programme.
