The Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) had declared the prelims result of the NCS, NPS, NSS & allied Services Exam on March 11, 2017 wherein 517 candidates were declared as eligible to sit for the mains exam. However, on close scrutiny of the prelims results, we detected some anomalies, which we think needs serious and immediate rectification by the NPSC in the interest of the NPSC aspiring candidates.
The NPSC in the year 2016 advertised seventy-four posts to different NCS, NPS, NSS & allied services and the preliminary exam was duly conducted on 8th October, 2016 where 11,765 aspiring candidates appeared in the different exam centres in the state. The results were duly declared on 11th March, 2017 with 517 candidates getting through to the mains.
The NPSC had declared the cut-off mark for the general category as 125. Therefore, on close examination of the “mark-list” provided by the NPSC, it has been found that only 185 candidates (both general and backward candidates) out of the 11,765 had crossed the cut-off mark. Out of those 185 candidates, we are sure there might be many from the backward category too.
According to the NPSC rules, 63 percent should be selected from the general candidates and 37 percent from the backward category. Therefore, we find some serious discrepancies in the recently declared NPSC 2016 prelims result. In this regard, we want to seriously question the NPSC about their selection process and determination of marks. And how the reservation quota is applied while determining who is a ‘general’ or a ‘backward’ candidate. The NPSC is very clear on the 37 percent Backward Tribe reservation which leaves only 63 percent for the ‘general’ (or so called advanced tribes) to compete for. However, if we do some arithmetic, then we can calculate that 63 percent for the general category out of the 517 candidates comes to 325 candidates. Therefore, out of the 517 candidates, there should be at least 325 candidates who secured 125 and above marks as general category candidates. But, in the mark-list, we counted only 185 candidates crossed the cut-off mark. This clearly indicates that only 185 candidates got through as general category, leaving the rest of the 517 candidates (i.e 332 candidates) as qualified through backward quota. Therefore, we want to question the NPSC how it determined the selected candidates especially for the general category candidates. We also ask the NPSC to furnish the exact number of general candidates among the 517 qualified candidates.
We sincerely hope that the NPSC, as the premier recruiting body in the state, would promptly clear out doubts so that the hundreds of aspiring candidates would not be discouraged in the days to come. Nevertheless, we also appeal the students’ bodies and every right thinking citizens to take note of our query since it concerns the whole Naga society and the future of the younger generation.
