Opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 in its present form: NEEC-JDU

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 4 (MExN): The Northeast Executive Council (NEEC), Janata Dal United has condemned the decision of the JPC for the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 to go ahead with the submission of its report to the Parliament on January 7.

A press statement issued by the NEEC-JDU maintained that the report in its present form is being “haphazardly wrapped up despite strong opposition from almost all stakeholders.” It alleged that the report is arbitrarily summed up rejecting all amendments moved by the different members and is therefore bereft of all rationality and does not intend to serve the interest of the indigenous people of Assam as well as the Northeast.

While vowing that it will not support the Bill both inside and outside the Parliament and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the proposed Bill is withdrawn in the larger benefit of the affected people, the JDU said it will continue to uphold its July 8, 2018 decision of the National Executive Meeting in Delhi which resolved to oppose the same.

The JDU also stated that it will join hands with like-minded political parties to build up pressure and also take up democratic course of action as it deem fit to prevail upon those favouring the Bill to see reason that are detrimental. It also extended support to civil societies like NESO and ASSU who are championing the course for the opposition of the said Bill.

Also extending its heartiest New Year greetings to the people of Northeast, the JDU promised that all issued of regional interest would be carried forward with more vigour and dedication in the forthcoming year till its logical conclusion.
