Opposition to shifting of Peren dist HQ

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 26 (MExN): Peren Village Council and other organizations have opposed the recent decision of District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) to shift Peren district headquarters to the new site by September this year.

Peren Village Council chairman Abibe and secretary Dipeu, Peren Village Students’ Union president Haichenbeu and Peren Village Youth Organisation president Chiliang in a joint statement termed the decision to shift to the new district headquarters as hasty, irrational and without taking into consideration practical realities.

The three organisations contended that the hurried move to shift administrative offices would only harass the public and government officers as the new site is still a “jungle” with no proper infrastructure.  The Peren organizations also pointed out that the new site still has no proper road connectivity, no water supply or power connection and no markets.

They argued that with no visible signs of development and lack of basic amenities, the government officers and employees cannot be expected to live in the “jungle” without any staff quarters. Moreover, it said the public too cannot be expected to walk 10-15 kms for all their official works without the public transport system.

While not opposing to the move to shift the administrative offices to the new site, the three organisations demanded that shifting of the government machineries should be done only after proper development of infrastructure to accommodate all departments and allocating plot to the people.

It may be noted that the DPDB, in its meeting on August 22 last under the chairmanship of the Planning minister TR Zeliang, has announced to shift and function at the new site tentatively from September 15. The decision to shift to new site was taken after confirmation from the Shifting Committee.

The Shifting Committee also confirmed that shifting process of 23 departments would be completed by September 15. It claimed that apart from 30 rooms at DC Complex, department buildings such as General Manager DIC and NKVI, DHO (Horticulture), DSO (Sericulture), DSO (Statistics) and Tourism are fully completed and all set to get into work once the shifting is done. The other 40 odd departments would move in phase manner.

Earlier on November 28, 2011, the Peren DPDB decided to shift all government machineries to the new site tentatively by January 2012.
