Organic farming system on Ginger cultivation at Phesama

Phesama, March 19 (MExN): With the objective to commercialize the use of Ginger, a hands-on-demonstration on organic farming system was conducted by ATMA Jakhama Block at Phesama on March 17. The programme was conducted with an FIG group from Phesama village.  

As ginger produced in the area goes only for domestic consumption, its commercial importance which is of aromatic value used as spice and medicinal values were highlighted, stated a press release received here.  

The resource persons highlighted that field preparation with minimum tillage operation and bed preparation with proper spacing was given on hand demonstration. The importance of maintaining buffer zone of 25 to 50 feet to be left all around the conventional farm depending on the location of the farm was shared for organic cultivation of ginger. Selection of healthy disease free rhizomes and sowing method, application of organic manure were touched.  

The importance of mulching methods using green leaves which not only act as green manure but also helps in soil and water conservation were shown to the farmers. Apart from ginger cultivation, organic methods of potato, leek cultivation and intercropping in ginger were discussed. As the group was undertaking ginger cultivation as one of their activities for the first time, its commercial values and value addition were also highlighted and the group was encouraged to pursue ginger candy making in future. Ginger rhizomes were given to the group by the department of Agriculture.  

Altogether, 10 members from the FIG group and three ATMA functionaries participated in the programme.
