Dimapur, June 19 (MExN): More organisations have come forward to condemn the alleged molestation of a woman in a moving auto-rickshaw in Dimapur on June 15. Besides denouncing the incident, they also called for swift justice for the victim and reiterated the demand for zero tolerance towards violence against women.
Two persons, including one juvenile, have reportedly been held in connection with the incident.
CMA: The Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA) denounced the incident as an unacceptable and egregious violation of women’s rights, stating that it constituted “an attack not only on an innocent individual but also a direct assault on the safety and dignity of women.”
Such crime breeds fear, insecurity and trauma, leaving no space for women to live peacefully with dignity and without fear even in our own homeland, it stated.
In this connection, it urged law enforcement to investigate the case seriously and adopt a zero-tolerance stance on violence against women.
The CMA will not remain silent in the face of injustice or violence against women and is committed to advocating for their rights, justice, security, and equality at all times, it added.
CAKSU: “Such an act is not only a grave violation of personal safety and dignity but also reflects the rising threats faced by women in our society,” Chakhro Angami Kuda Students’ Union (CAKSU) stated in its condemnation.
While expressing relief over the arrest of the alleged accused, the union stated that it places full trust in the concerned authorities to ensure swift and uncompromising legal action, while emphasising that crimes against women must be met with zero tolerance.
It also extended complete solidarity with the victim and her family and conveyed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of everyone in the society.
CSU: The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) condemned the incident as a “cowardly and depraved act,” not just a crime but a direct attack on the dignity, freedom, and safety of all women.
“The increasing vulnerability of women in public spaces is unacceptable, and we refuse to remain silent,” it asserted, demanding immediate and stringent action from law enforcement agencies.
The CSU also expressed unwavering solidarity with the victim and her family and affirmed that it will relentlessly monitor the case until justice is served.
TSUD: The Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD stated that the “vile crime” underscores the urgent need for immediate and stringent action, adding that the act is unequivocally “criminal, inexcusable, and disgusting to be justified.”
It further urged law enforcement to ensure a swift, transparent investigation and proper legal support for the victim.
The TSUD emphasised that the safety of women should never be compromised, calling for stricter regulations, improved surveillance, and effective enforcement of legal provisions.
“Beyond legal measures, there is also a deep-seated need for societal change,” it added, including the need to recognise and uphold the values of respect, dignity, and shared humanity. The Union affirmed its solidarity with the victim and all survivors of gender-based violence.
Thetsümi village organisations: The Thetsümi Village Council, along with the Thetsümi Students’ Union (TSU), Thetsümi Youth Society (TYS), and Thetsümi Women Society (TWS), also condemned the appalling incident, stating it is not just a criminal act but a brutal violation of a woman’s dignity and safety.
They demanded that the concerned authorities act swiftly and decisively to ensure the perpetrators face the full extent of the law.
“The Thetsümi Village Council and its affiliated bodies will remain vigilant and relentless in our pursuit of justice. We will actively monitor the investigation and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable,” the joint statement asserted.
DRSU: The Dimapur Rengma Students’ Union (DRSU) also expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as a “cowardly and inhumane act” that violates not only an individual’s safety and rights but also stands as a stain on the collective conscience.
“The victim deserves not only justice but also assurance that our society will no longer turn a blind eye to violence against women,” it stated, calling for strict legal action against the perpetrators while emphasising that such crimes cannot and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The DRSU extended its unwavering support to the victim and her loved ones, acknowledging her courage to speak out and commending the members of the public who acted swiftly to assist and report the crime.
