Highlighting that Oriental College Kohima has been giving immense service to higher education for the last 28 years not only for students from the North East but also from states like West Bengal and Bihar, Principal of Oriental College Kohima, Dr Khriereizhünuo Dzüvichü stated on Friday that, “apart from excellence in academic, we are grooming our students to be the next generation leaders.”
Addressing a press conference in the college IQAC Room on October 25, she was speaking in relation to the Annual College Skill Fest, which she also termed as “the institutional distinctiveness” while stating that “it is one-of-a-kind in our state and it is not done by any other college on a comprehensive level that we are doing.”
Further describing the Skill Fest as the bridge between college and career life to be self-reliant and self-independent, she highlighted that it is provided to all the students. “The interest and experience gained from this is helping them to take their next step when they graduate from the college”, she highlighted.
The Principal went on to state that “they are not mere graduates but when they move out from the college, they are armed with the possibility and potential of starting at least a small business.” She said that the Skill Fest is helping students to ease the socio-economic problem in the state by helping them stand on their own two feet.
The Skill Fest which includes comprehensive and hands-on training given to the students and the way in which they engage the community, she remarked is “an avenue of solution to socio-economic problems.” She further elaborated that the Skill Fest is a time of creativity, innovation and hands-on learning for students to hone their skills and become independent as they leave the college.
“It not only inspires and motivates students but contribute meaningfully to the growth of the society in mitigating problems like unemployment and government dependency for livelihood”, she added.
6th Edition of Oriental College Skill Fest from October 28-30
In line with the vision of the college to provide holistic education to its students and to mould them into responsible citizens, the 6th edition of Oriental College Skill Fest will be held from October 28-30 in collaboration with the Department of Land Resources and Department of Horticulture with “Empowering students through skills” as the theme.
Convener, Vizotuo Thorie highlighted that the trades in which skills training will be provided during the Skill Fest include Mushroom Cultivation, Basket Making, Bamboo works, Carpentry, Electrical fittings, Beauty and wellness, Embroidery, Knitting and weaving, Baking and Coffee making.
In the past five editions, the college has also imparted trainings on trades such as Coffee plantation, piggery farming, floriculture, mushroom cultivation, food processing, entrepreneurship, dolls and ornament making, handicrafts and carpentry, painting and framing, baking, knitting, fishery, shopping bags, paper bags and envelops, disposable plates and spoons, leaves wrapping and biddings, bamboo works, pickle making, flower arrangement, masonry, plumbing, solar panel installation, guitar, vocal, and soap making.
The 6th edition will have resource persons from Nagaland Rural Livelihoods Mission, Department of Land Resources, Department of Horticulture and local entrepreneur from different fields.
Mention may be made here that Oriental College Kohima initiated the ‘Skill Fest’ in the year 2017 under the leadership of Dr Ketshukietuo Dzüvichü (Former Principal) with Dr Gopal Chetri (Former Vice Principal) as the Convener. With the more challenging world at hand, it felt the need for students and young minds to have vocational trainings in different interested trades.
The programme was introduced with the aim to bring out the hidden talents and potentials in each individual and eventually to look for entrepreneurship and self-employment and in addition learn the much needed skills required for family purposes. Its objectives are to explore students’ skills and talents to enable them to adopt independent living, increase the productivity and employability of the workforce, provide training, support and guidance for all students, raise confidence, improved productivity and give direction through proper training and to work together with peers and family to make positive contribution to the college, home and wider community.
Highlights of the press conference include vote of thanks by Chibeni Murry, Vice Principal (Admin) while Akhrienuo Chietsu, Assistant Professor, Department of English chaired the conference.
