The Sukhai community participated in World Environment Day celebrations on June 5 at Sukhai village. As part of the event, a plantation drive was conducted, focusing on ornamental trees aimed at beautification as well as enhancing environmental sustainability and climate change resilience.

The initiative was supported by the G Kaito Aye, Minister for Roads and Bridges, Government of Nagaland. Aye contributed not only planting materials but also financial support. “Significantly, he is leading the plantation drive in Zunheboto district and is the first politician in the area to take part in the Mass Awareness Plantation Drive,” said Ivan Zhimomi, Lead of the Team Tizu Valley Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Network, Zunheboto.

Zhimomi said that combating global warming and climate change requires collective action—not just from politicians, but from every citizen. He appealed to the people of Nagaland to participate in plantation drives. He also called on the state government to implement a forest conservation policy and a comprehensive plantation policy that benefits all of humanity. “This drive is not just a programme, it is a responsibility for every conscious and responsible citizen of the state,” he added.

V Tokugha Sukhai Akukutou VCC said, “We are not planting these saplings for publicity or for decoration but it is our aim and our duty to look after this plantation for future use and for our own good.”
