Access to live-catch fish in Mokokchung is set to become more convenient with the launch of Osail Mart, the town’s first live fish mart, at Chuchuyimpang Village on September 16.
Located near Police Baptist Church, the mart was officially launched by Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Tsukti Lkr and dedicated by Rev S Toshi, Pastor of Mongya Prayer Garden.
Apart from in-store sales, Osail Mart will provide doorstep delivery of live fish within Mokokchung Town. Proprietor Opangrenba said customers can place orders through the mart’s dedicated social media handle, choose their preferred varieties and receive deliveries through the mart’s courier team.
Opangrenba said the venture was initiated after research indicated considerable demand for live fish in the town. He added that the business was inspired by innovative market models observed outside Nagaland, which he believed could be adapted to local needs.
Describing himself as a local entrepreneur and “son of the soil,” Opangrenba said serving the community through essential services was a calling. He said Osail Mart was established with the aim of providing “quality food and quality life” to residents.
Speaking at the launch, MCCI President Tsukti Lkr said the venture could strengthen Mokokchung’s market by offering consumers a reliable source of quality fish.
He recalled that the detection of formalin in fish four years ago had resulted in a serious market crisis and a four-month blanket ban on fish supplies. In this context, he said, initiatives such as Osail Mart could help ensure continuity in the supply of safe and quality fish while reducing the possibility of similar disruptions.
Lkr said Mokokchung was gradually developing as a commercial centre serving Tuensang, Longleng, Noklak, Shamator and parts of Zunheboto and Wokha. While acknowledging the town’s expanding supply chain and affordable market, he cautioned that the market was also becoming increasingly saturated.
He called for greater commercial expansion and urged the people of Chuchuyimpang to welcome new businesses, saying local enterprises were essential to sustaining the town’s overall growth.
