More than 300 villages in Nagaland still lack mobile network coverage, and over 320 villages are yet to be covered by 4G services, according to data presented by the Union Ministry of Communications in the Lok Sabha on July 30.
Out of 1,535 villages in Nagaland as per the Registrar General of India data from November 2019, 1,234 had mobile connectivity as of May 31, 2025, according to data presented by Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, in a written response provided in the Lower House of Parliament.
Further, 1,211 villages were covered by 4G services, indicating that 301 villages still lack any form of mobile connectivity, while 324 villages are yet to receive 4G coverage.
Meanwhile, the data indicated that more than 91% of the villages in the North East have mobile connectivity, with nearly 88% covered by 4G networks. As of May 31, 41,933 out of the 45,934 villages in the region have mobile network access, of which 40,399 villages have 4G coverage.
Among the eight NE states, Assam has the highest mobile and 4G coverage, with 26,007 of its 26,429 villages connected to mobile networks, and 25,934 enjoying 4G access.
The MoS further stated that, as of June 30, 2025, a total of 6,355 Gram Panchayats in the North Eastern Region have been made “service-ready” under BharatNet, which aims to deliver broadband services including Wi-Fi hotspots and Fibre to the Home (FTTH) connections on demand.
The Government is implementing various schemes under Digital Bharat Nidhi for the expansion of internet facilities through the installation of 4G mobile towers in rural and remote areas of the country under the 4G saturation project, he said.
In addition, the Government is providing support of Rs 3.25 crore (excluding taxes) to BSNL for hiring of 10 Gbps International Bandwidth for Internet Connectivity to ensure the availability of high-quality and high-speed internet access to the NE states, he added.
