More than 600 persons had registered for a medical camp for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) held at the Town Hall, Zunheboto, on September 11, with a large number of beneficiaries waiting in line during the time of reporting.
The camp was organised by the Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority (ZDLSA), under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), in collaboration with Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital, Zunheboto.
The camp aimed to screen and identify PwDs, conduct medical assessments by qualified medical professionals and facilitate the issuance of disability certificates to eligible beneficiaries.
The programme also sought to help persons with disabilities access government welfare schemes and entitlements, while providing legal awareness and information on their rights and the availability of free legal services.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Easter H Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer, ZDLSA, and began with an invocation by Kivika Yeptho, Chaplain, District Hospital, Zunheboto.
Delivering the keynote address, Atoka Achumi, NJS, District and Sessions Judge, Zunheboto and Chairman of ZDLSA, highlighted the importance of ensuring access to justice, healthcare and welfare benefits for persons with disabilities.
He emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among legal, medical and administrative institutions to ensure that eligible persons receive the support and entitlements available to them.
Medical Superintendent of Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital, Dr Keholi Chishi, also spoke on the importance of proper medical assessment and timely access to healthcare services for persons with disabilities.
Speaking during the programme, Easter H Yepthomi said the camp was not merely for issuing disability certificates, but was also intended to provide medical attention and facilitate access to government schemes and benefits available to persons with disabilities.
She stressed the importance of building a society where persons with disabilities can participate and strive alongside others, noting that the camp was specifically focused on addressing their medical, legal and welfare-related needs.
During the camp, disability-related forms were processed and medical assessments carried out to facilitate the issuance of disability certificates. Eligible beneficiaries were to be issued certificates following assessment.
The camp also provided guidance and facilitation to persons requiring additional medical or legal assistance. Beneficiaries were encouraged to attend with family members or caregivers where necessary. The services provided under the camp were free of cost.
The programme concluded with closing remarks by Vesutolu Therie, NJS, Judicial Magistrate First Class and Secretary, ZDLSA.
