Over 80 defaulters penalised for defying COPTA 2003 in Nagaland

Mon, May 9 (MExN): To commemorate the month of World No Tobacco Day 2023 and also to strengthen Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA) 2003 in the district, an Enforcement Squad under National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Mon carried out a surprise raid on sale of tobacco products near the school area on May 9. 

A DIPR report stated here that a total number of 15 shops violated COTPA Sec 6(b) and two shops violated COTPA Sec 6(a).

The defaulters were penalised and tobacco products were seized and destroyed at the premises of Police Station Mon. 

Wokha: The COTPA flying squad team led by SI (2nd O/C) Thungchio Ngullie from PS Wokha, along with the staff of NTCP, Dobashi (DBs) from District Administrative, Women Police personnel Wokha, conducted enforcement drive/raid on selling tobacco products near educational institutions on May 9.

During the raid, the team penalised nine defaulters under COTPA Sec6a and 6b for selling tobacco products and seized the tobacco products from the shops falling within the restricted areas. 

The defaulters were penalised (Violators under COTPA Sec 6b) with a fine of Rs 200, stated a DIPR report. 

The team will be frequently conducting such kind of raid in coming days also. Further, shopkeepers were directed to abide by the COTPA Act, and warned that necessary legal action shall be initiated as per the provision of the Law, it stated. The seized tobacco products were destroyed the same day at Police Station Wokha premises in presence of all the flying squad members.

Phek: District Tobacco Control Cell, NTCP Phek carried out enforcement drive for implementation of COTPA 2003 in and around Phek town on May 9. 

The drive was carried out by the staff of NTCP, Police personnel and Dobashis, NHM Phek stated in a press release. 

During the drive 10 shops were penalised for violation of COTPA 2003 under Section 6 (a) and the shopkeepers were apprised of the various Sections under COTPA 2003 for future compliance. 

Mokokchung: Enforcement activity was carried out by DTCC Mokokchung under NTCP along with law enforcers from PS-1 Mokokchung on May 9.

Tobacco products were seized from seven shops and were penalized under COTPA 2003 Section 6(b) sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of any Educational Institution, CMO office Mokokchung stated in a press release. 

Zunheboto: The NTCP enforcement drive under Zunheboto district was carried out at Zunheboto town near the educational institutions under the COTPA Act 2003 along with police personnel. A total of ten shops were penalized and amount of Rs 1900 was collected from the defaulters and seized items were later burned inside the police station. This was stated in a press release issued by District Media Officer, Zunheboto. 

Dimapur: The enforcement squad of the District Tobacco Control cell, Dimapur (DTCC) conducted surprise checking drive against the violators of COTPA Section-6(b) which prohibits sale of tobacco products within a radius of one hundred yards of any educational institution. The drive was conducted in areas where shops are located within 100 yards of schools in Dimapur on May 9.  

A total of 11 shops were penalized and tobacco products were seized.

Longleng: Longleng district enforcement squad team under NTCP, COPTA Act 2003 and Child Right Protection conducted a surprise raid on sales of tobacco products within Longleng town on May 8. 

The team was led by Dr Samuel Konyak, EAC Longleng, Dr Bongau Phom, District Nodel Officer NTCP, Longleng and Bunglang, Chang, SDPO Longleng, stated a DIPR report.

The seized tobacco products were burnt at DC office premises in presence of District Administration, Medical Department and DEF Longleng. A total of 25 shops were penalised and were imposed a fine during the raid.
