Kohima, July 28 (MExN): Panel Lawyers of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) from all the districts were trained on various legal topics (legislations, NALSA schemes, Act and Provisions) during the second day of the three-day ‘Induction Training of Panel Lawyers on Lawyering Skills’ on July 28. Organized by NSLSA under the Department of Justice and Law, the training is held at Directorate of State Institute of Rural Development, Kohima.
Speaking on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (maintenance of a wife), Esther Aye, Legal Aid Counsel cum Trainer NSLSA apprised that the National Crime Records Bureau has reported a steep rise in the number of crimes against women and children in recent times. She pointed out that despite many laws in the country pertaining to crimes against women there is demand for amendments from time to time.
Aye said that the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 is a step towards safeguarding women against ill treatment at the hands of their husbands and in-laws and other male members of the family.
Under the Act, she stated, it is the duty of the police officers, protection officer, service provider or magistrate on receipt of complaint to inform aggrieved person of her rights.
Dwelling on child protection mechanism POCSO, Child Marriage, JJ Act, Neiguvotuo Kruse, Legal Aid Counsel cum Trainer NSLSA informed that there are mechanisms on child protection system in Nagaland such as District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs), emergency outreach services through Childline and village/ward Level Child Protection Committee (VLCPC).
He said that 64 Child Care Institutions (CCIs) operating under the State Child Protection Society Nagaland, 10 observation home, 1 special home, 10 shelter home, 3 open shelter, 34 children home and 5 specialised adoption agencies are there for children in the State.
Neite-o Koza, Panel Lawyer NSLSA spoke on Lok Adalat and its mechanism, Limasenla Longkumer, Legal Aid Counsel cum Trainer NSLSA on Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Limhathung Ezung, Legal Aid Counsel cum Trainer NSLSA on Laweyering Skills- Civil (Drafting, Witness Examination and Arguments).
Experience sharing workshop held
The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) conducted a workshop on experience sharing/performance sharing of Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers at Kohima Bar room on July 26.
Delivering a brief introduction, Victo Sema, CJM Kohima and Secretary KDLSA highlighted the role of PL and PLVs and counseled them on how to reach out to the common man, especially the marginalised section of the society.
A short speech on PL/PLVs was shared by Sunjib Rana, Panel Lawyer KDLSA. During the sharing of performance Seto, PL KDLSA, Hesinlo, PL KDLSA, Apila Sangtam PL KDLSA, Kedovi PL KDLSA, Wapangienla, PL KDLSA and Anu, PLV shared their experiences.
On the same day, the Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) conducted a workshop on experience sharing/performance sharing of Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers at front office MDLSA. Mannon Konyak, Panel Lawyer and Dominic Kaiba, Panel Lawyer shared the experience of Panel Lawyer, while Tngkai Konyak PLV, B. Phmsa Konyak PLV and Nyemin Konyak PLV shared the experience of PLV. This was followed by an interaction session.
