The Phek Area Public Organisation (PAPO) issued a statement on October 4 condemning what was alleged to be a sexual assault on a woman by a member of one Naga Political Group.

According to the PAPO statement, the alleged incident occurred on September 24 at a village in Phek district. It named the accused as one Hekugha Chophi, a member of the NSCN (IM), who “tried to rape and torture” the victim on September 24. It was allegedly the third such attempt on the victim, a prayer house keeper.

The PAPO appealed all right thinking citizens to condemn and assist in tracing out the culprit, said to be in his forties, and urged the law enforcement authorities to arrest him at the earliest. “This kind of act is never acceptable in a civilized society and must be treated with outmost seriousness and punish the culprit as per the law of the land in the strongest term,” it said.

The PAPO President, when contacted by The Morung Express, informed that the victim lodged a police complaint against the accused on September 26. Official police sources confirmed registering the FIR, and that investigation was on to nab the accused.
