Pause for NU: Acting Vice Chancellor appointed

Dimapur, March 17 (MExN): Offering a whiff of respite to an embattled Nagaland University, the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) Thursday appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor BS Chauhan, one of the senior-most professors of the university.

Professor BS Chauhan who is from the Department of Social Conservation, SASARD Medziphema would be holding responsibilities in the Acting-capacity till the MHRD decides on (either of) his complete instatement as the Vice Chancellor or another incumbent to hold the position, according to highly-placed sources. He was appointed to the capacity by virtue of being the senior-most professor in NU.

As reported earlier in this paper, Professor BS Chauhan is one of the three senior-most professors selected by the NU authorities as probables for an interregnum Vice Chancellor forwarded to the MHRD March 10. The other two probables were Professor Lanunungsang and Professor VB Singh.

“Professor BS Chauhan has taken over as the Acting Vice Chancellor from today” confirmed Rosemary Dzuvichu President of the agitating Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA). Dzuvichu also informed that since an acting VC has been appointed classes will resume from Monday, March 20.

However, she reminded that resumption of classes did not mean the NUTA and Post Graduate student Union (PGSU) agitation was being withdrawn.

The two NU organizations are calling for acceptance of Professor GD Sharma’s resignation by the Visitor, the President of India as well as enquiry into the various charge of mismanagement and fund embezzlement. “The agitations will be called off only if the Visitor formally accepts Professor GD Sharma’s resignation” Dzuvichu said.

Meanwhile, the PGSU and the NUTA have informed that regular classes would resume from March 20. The PGSU, Kohima campus will also hold a general assembly on March 21, 10:00AM at the Department of History & Archeology.
