'Pay for contractual and regularized nurses equally'

Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): The Naga Rising today wrote to the Principal Director, Health and Family Welfare, seeking salary parity for the department’s contractual nurses with their regularized counterparts.

In the letter, The Naga Rising stated that the contractual nurses, whose workload is no less than the other regular nurses, are ‘highly underpaid’ with wages “as low as 1/5th of the salary of their regular counterparts.” It is learnt that ANM and GNM nurses on contract get as low as Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000 which is even less than what the daily wage labourers earn, it added.

As such, The Naga Rising requested the Principal Director to intervene and take urgent necessary steps to boost the morale of the frontline workers and resolve the disparity by implementing the Supreme Court’s order of 2011 and the subsequent recommendations of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with regard to wages of nurses.

The government should use COVID cess fund to cover the increase in the salary of the nurses during the pandemic period, it added.
