‘Pay up for killing pigs’ : Konyak Students

MON, OCT 9 (MExN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) demanded of the Veterinary department to compensate for losses incurred by swine owners in the region. More than 500 pigs whose value has been placed at Rs 5- 10 lakh have died unnatural deaths during the last two months at Mon due to the negligence of the department, according to a press release issued by Minphong Konyak, of the KSU. Swine owners, upon hearing rumours of the spread of swine fever had sought to take the help of the department. However, as Minphong puts it, “the incompetent and mal-functioning department, without proper research or inquiry prescribed the vaccine to the anxious public, which led to this disaster.” Pharmacies have also come under the scanner. They have been alleged of having prescribed medicines without any knowledge pertaining to the case. “After a few weeks of receiving wrong medicine, the vaccine, instead of acting as an antibiotic, began to claim the lives of the pigs in hundreds, whereas those pigs which had not been treated remained normal and healthy till now,” the release said.

The department, headed by the District Veterinary Officer has been alleged of not taking up any preventive measure against this “immense slaughter.” The release cautioned, “Otherwise the public, in this turmoil, is set upon ransacking the remnant of this so-called Department”.
