Kohima, Dec 14 (MExN): Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio today told the floor of the house that a collective responsibility is essential to maintain peace in the state and appealed to the opposition members to contribute towards it. He also said that an implementing mechanism was required for peace to prevail.
In a reply to MLA Taka Masa with regard to quit notice, Rio said that the serving of quit notice to Tangkhuls was ‘unfortunate’ as everyone has a right to live anywhere.
Home Minister Thenucho also informed the Assembly Session that apart from incidents of factional clashes the general law and order situation in the state has remained normal.
He was replying to a question raised by MLA C. Apok Jamir on the law and order situation in the state.
On being asked about the number of factional clashes that took place during 2006 and to furnish in detail the number of people/insurgents killed or injured, the Minister revealed that there were a total of 89 incidents of factional clashes between January 1, 2006 to December 2, 2006 wherein 46 persons were killed and 52 persons injured.
Thenucho stated that factional clashes were a matter of serious concern, adding that the government was trying its best to stop it and at the same time he appealed to the legislators to suggest remedial measures.
On being asked on the steps taken by the government to stop factional clashes between the insurgent groups, Thenucho said the civil administration and the police in all the districts remains on high alert for checking and controlling the situation.
Through the initiative of the Consultative Committee for Peace (CCP) under the DAN government, civil societies, church organizations and NGOs are encouraged to mediate in all such incidents and to take an active role in the peace initiatives, Thenucho said.
