Minister for Transport and Communication Imtilemba Sangtam today challenged the Phom people to take advantage of peace and the prevailing conducive atmosphere to secure prosperity and development.
Speaking at the 54th Phom Day here this morning, the minister said “Today you have chosen peace and peace is prevailing in your land” and went onto to describe it as the “best blessing”.
Phom Day is observed to mark the end of the head-hunting era among the Phoms. It was on June 6, 1952 through the wisdom of the elders that the Phom people pledged never to practice that evil culture. Since then, Phom Day is observed to celebrate the era of peace and loyalty among the Phoms.
The minister urged upon the people to make friends with everyone without any distinction. “Your good deeds or actions will be a living example for others to follow,” he added.
Imtilemba also made a fervent appeal to all the national workers to shun violence and to maintain peace and tranquility among the people of Nagaland.
Singing sweet tune on the fertile land of Phoms, the minister wanted the people to properly utilize the same for all kinds of agricultural activities.
Touching on the declaration of the year 2006 as the year of farmers, the minister encouraged the farmers to come forward and avail the various packages being extended by the government. At the same time, he stressed on the need to identify the correct crops to increase the volume of production.
Asking the people to avoid dependence on others, he encouraged them to strive for attaining self-sufficiency. ”You must try to help yourself. Self-help is the best help. Do not depend on others all your life,” he said.
President Phom Day, Y. Alemchuba Phom called upon all the concerned to reaffirm and continue to work for the peace, progress and development of the Phom community and Nagas as a whole. Cultural items, handloom and handicraft exhibition, volleyball match also marked the occasion.
BJP state secretaries Merenchiba and James, EE (NST) Akuto, M. Sangtam, Joint Director, Employment accompanied the minister.
Longleng Deputy Commissioner Z. Thele and a host of government officials attended the occasion.
