Peli No. 13 (Riisouriilou Peli), L. Khel, Kohima village celebrated its silver jubilee cum Sekrenyi with much zest and traditional gaiety on Monday at Meriibotsa, L. Khel, Kohima village.
Gracing the event as the chief guest, parliamentary secretary for youth resources & sports, Music Task Force and State Lotteries Khriehu Liezietsu stressed on the need to preserve and promote good traditions and customs.
He also called upon the people to maintain unity and peaceful co-existence.
Stating that Sekrenyi is the festival of purification, he called upon the community to celebrate and reflect the true meaning of the festivity by upholding the good traditional practices of forefathers.
He said with the coming of Christianity in the state, all the rites and rituals associated with the festival are no longer followed, today we celebrate the festival to keep our identity alive through folk songs, folk dances and indigenous games.
“We need to continue to uphold our good culture and traditions through proper conduct of ethics and behavior,” he said.
Earlier, he unveiled the jubilee monolith in commemoration of the 25 glorious years of Peli No 13.
Also exhorting the gathering, Dimapur deputy commissioner Kesonyii Yhome, IAS regretted that in the fast changing world, we are losing many good culture and traditions.
“We need to reflect on where we are heading to,” he said.
He suggested that a monthly cultural class or cultural session be initiated to propagate and preserve the good culture and traditions.
Also stressing on the need to preserve and conserve wildlife and forests, he said a time has come for us to revive and regenerate our ecosystem.
“Let us also continue to uphold our forefather’s cultural traits and values of honesty and integrity,” he said.
The function was chaired by Kelhouneizo Yhome while welcome address was delivered by organizing committee convenor Kelhoukhrietuo Tseikha.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Zapuvizo Liezietsu. The celebration concluded with a grand Sekrenyi feast.
