‘People neglect the ethical and moral value that concern life’

Dimapur, March 24 (MExN): Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Professor K Kannan today inaugurated a two day national seminar on ‘respect for life’ organised by the department of philosophy, Patkai Christian College.  The seminar is being jointly organised by Salesian College of Higher Education. The technical sessions of the seminar will focus on issues such as suicide, abortion, depression, capital punishment, marriage and divorce. Topics like war and violence, cloning and its ethical considerations, mercy killings will be taken up. Eminent professors in philosophy from different Indian universities have been drawn in as resource persons. 
Seminar on ‘respect for life’ underway
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. RK Behera, convener of the seminar said young people today need to be informed about the realities of life.  He remarked that in the quest for intellectual knowledge, people neglect the ethical and moral value that concern life.  “Young people today are so confused or have no knowledge of certain realities of life like sacredness of life, forgiveness, love, etc,” he said. Basing on issues like abortion, suicide, euthanasia and cloning, he added that human life is under threat in contemporary society, both at the beginning and end of life.
Professor Kannan, in his address, also underscored the need to respect one another. He opined that the technological age has turned man immune to other people’s sufferings. “Suffering is a part of life. Accept it and you will learn to respect other people’s sufferings,” he said. He touched upon the various topics chosen for the seminar and gave his opinion on issues like abortion, depression, cloning, etc.
Students from the department of philosophy in Patkai Christian College, Salesian College of Higher Education and Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung are participating in the seminar.
