People of Athibung cry for peace

Jalukie: About eight hundred people from every walk of life attended the public Peace Rally at Athibung recently to voice their cry for peace in the area plagued by factional clashes between rival underground groups. The public peace rally was organized by the Kuki Inpi, GB Union Athibung area and the Athibung Town Council (ATC).

Leaders from different organizations as well as church leaders, who took part in the rally, one of the biggest ever peace gatherings ever in the area, lent a desperate voice for restoration of peace and normalcy in the Athibung circle.

Addressing the public gathering as one of the speakers, president of the Kuki Inpi Asat Doungel regretted that the State government and various leading NGOs have failed to hear the desperate cries of the helpless people of Athibung circle. Reflecting the tense situation and fear psychosis of the area has grieved that “The loss of lives and injuries inflicted on the civilian is unfortunate” Doungel while expressing his concern over the prevailing situation in the area also fervently called upon the different factions to refrain from firing and clashing in the civilian areas.

Voicing the general sentiments of the people in the Athibung circle he further reiterated that ever since the frequent clashes started between the two NSCN factions, tension and insecurity had taken over the minds and hearts of the people and the living condition of the innocent public had become miserable and hopeless.

“We are not asking for big things, but just peace and harmony, there should not be anymore bloodshed, give peace a chance” said Doungel while presenting a representation to the head of the administration.

The rally concluded with a slogan so long shared by people living under the shadow of the gun and bloodshed ‘We want Peace.’ A benediction was pronounced by C. Asat, Pastor of the CRC Athibung.
