
DIMAPUR, MARCH 3 (MExN): SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organized a one-day Workshop on “Preservation of fruits and vegetables & mushroom cultivation” on March 2 at Tuli Town in Mokokchung District where around 140 participants from 8 villages nearby Tuli, 9 different Wards of Tuli and RAWE students placed at 5 different villages under Tuli sub-division, comprising of educated unemployed youth, SHGs, progressive farmers and RAWE students, attended a day long workshop cum training at Tuli Town Council Hall.
The programme started with an invocation prayer by Imkong, Pastor, Baptist Church Tuli Lenden and was chaired by Dr Akali Sema, Coordinator of the workshop. I Toshisungba IPS, Commandant Special NAP, the chief guest at the function, exhorted the participants and encouraged them to take full advantage of the workshop by learning as much as possible from the resource persons.
He enumerated his past association with agriculture and said that even during his police training they were exposed to agriculture extension training, which depicts the great importance of agriculture in every aspects of life. Tuli has not yet tapped its full potential and people are still ignorant of their bountiful resources that can be judiciously utilized for improving their economic status, he commented. He expressed his optimism that these types of initiatives of conducting workshops and trainings would bear fruit and improve the economy of the rural poor.
Earlier in the programme Prof Imnayongdang, Dean SASRD, gave the welcome address while the participants were favoured by a special number from BSc (Ag) final year students and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr L Daiho, Head, Dept of Plant Pathology, SASRD NU. The resource persons included Prof A Saikia, Dept of Horticulture, AAU Jorhat , Dr Adhikari, RRL Jorhat, Dr L Daiho, Head, Dept of Plant Pathology, SASRD NU, Dr Tiameren, Lecturer, Dept of Plant Pathology, SASRD NU, Dr Pauline Alila, Sr. Lecturer, Dept of Horticulture, SASRD NU, Dr CS Maiti, Lecturer, Dept of Horticulture, SASRD NU and Dr Akali Sema, Head, Dept. of Horticulture, SASRD NU, who spoke on various aspects of preservation of locally available fruits and vegetables and mushroom cultivation.
I Lipzuk, Chairman Tuli Town Council was guest of honour at the closing function. He urged the participants that getting a certificate for attending this workshop should always remind them of the things learned and to put into practice so that the certificate has its worth.
Feedback was given by Sunup, Representative of RAWE Students, Ms Narola, SHG representative, Tinu, Educated unemployed youth and Chuchum Yanger, Chairman of Tuli Ward. They commented that this workshop was one of its kind and an eye opener for the people of Tuli, who were ignorant of the rich available resources and their utilization. They expressed the need for more such programmes to sensitise the people thoroughly in order to enable the people to exploit the full potential of their resourceful land. One participant remarked that “people of Tuli are poor people living in a rich land.”
As a closing remark, the Coordinator of the Workshop expressed hope that some percentage of the seed sown through this awareness programme may germinate and grow so that in times to come the people of Tuli will utilize their rich resources judiciously, thereby uplifting their economy.
The function was chaired by Dr Tiameren, SASRD NU and the day long programme winded with benediction by Ms Mapula, Women Leader, Tuli Town Baptist Church.
