Peren BBBP orientation prog calls for ‘gender equality’

Peren, February 27 (MExN): A sensitization and orientation programme for religious leaders, community leaders and parents organised by Peren district administration in collaboration with DLCW, Education Department and Nagaland University was held at Peren Town Council hall on February 27 with Prof Lungsang Zeliang and Dr Khotole as resource person.

 


Resource person, Prof Lungsang Zeliang said that Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) emphasized on the equality of the girl and boy child and that the birth of a girl child should be equally celebrated.

 


“India being a democratic secular republic, it is a foregone conclusion that girl children should be equally celebrated and there should be no denial of rights to them. But even before she is born she is discriminated upon,” she stated. She said that the girl child is more vulnerable in society and vulnerable to trafficking. She talked about child marriage which should not be encouraged. 

 


On the role of mothers, the resource person urged the parents to treat their children equally and also stressed on health of a girl child, importance of parental involvement and inculcating values, fostering girl child welfare to use different platforms – church, schools, office society and social network to campaign for gender equality, to avail schemes meant for securing the future of girls child, and girl child education as an investment.

 


Dr Khotole speaking as another resource person urged the teachers and the community to give a girls child dignity in school by creating an environment where the children once enrolled in school will not drop out of school. She further stated that designing of lesson plans to expand understanding and inclusion of girls child in various activities will sensitize gender equality. 

 


A DIPR report stated that the programme was attended by representative of civil society, NGOs, church, youths and parents.
