DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (MExN): With the posting of the first Medical Superintendent, Dr. RN Newmai, specialists and others at Peren Civil Hospital, fast changes are taking place in the hospital but of course, first things have to come first and no miracles should be expected to take place overnight.
Just the other day, the whole fraternity of the hospital’s staff, notwithstanding the MS himself, were heavily engaged in a face-lift social work in the hospital premises, including creation of a sizeable parking space there. The staffers were assisted in their work by a JBC arranged and assigned by the EE (PWD) R&B of Peren.
According to the MS, it is just a matter of days before the hospital becomes a First Referral Unit (FRU) fully equipped with a laboratory and a blood bank facility. The hospital will also have an X-ray facility. Moreover, with the generator set for the OT in place, a 3-phase power supply and provision for continuous water supply being connected to the OT, through the initiative of the MS and his colleagues, it is just a matter of time before the Operation Theatre (OT) also turns functional. The MS has also disclosed that Ultra-Sound facility in the hospital is in the offing.
However, although most of the essential equipments for the OT have arrived and it is almost functional, yet there are still few essential surgical instruments which are yet to be made available. The MS and his team deserves an applause as they are “starting” the hospital basically from a scratch. The MS also extends his appreciation to the BSNL for providing a new telephone connection for the hospital as well as to the Peren Deputy Commissioner, Peren EE (PWD), PHED, Electrical department and the Peren Town Council for giving special attention to the needs of the hospital
It is also learnt that there is acute shortage of rooms in the hospital. For instance, presently, there is no room available in the hospital to install an X-ray machine, none for nursing-in-charge, neither a labour room nor one for storing. Moreover, as the hospital does not have an ambulance, it has been using the service of the Red Cross Ambulance in emergencies.
Although the new OPD building is on the verge of completion, reportedly, due to exhaustion of funds, finishing touches could not be carried out there; and once again, work on the extension of indoor ward for OPD block has not seen any activity for days. It shall be for best interest of the Peren public if necessary funds are released for the completion of the new OPD building. If work on the extension of indoor ward resumes at the earliest and continues till completion, the new OPD would be functional sooner and if sufficient rooms are made available, immediate health matters would be addressed.
Earlier, a hospital improvement committee was set up on October 26 with Dr.RN Newmai as Chairman, Dr.Tumda as Secretary and Akwet (Pharmacist) as its Treasurer. Representatives of medical officers, nurses and ministerial staffs in the Committee were also set. While reiterating on the need for the public to feel ownership of the hospital, the MS also briefed all the staffers on the importance of sincerity in one’s duty and on the need to educate villager-patients, in particular, on civic sense in keeping the hospital clean.
