Peren fish farmers trained in best practices for pond management

Peren, May 14 (MExN): A day-long training programme on “Your Pond’s Health is Your Wealth: Best Practices in Pond Management” for 40 fish farmers was inaugurated at the Community Hall in Beisumpuikam village of Nagaland’s Peren district on May 14.

A DIPR update informed that the village has been adopted as a model village by the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Peren.

Addressing the participants, District Fishery Officer C Dory Yanthan said the training programme was being conducted under the Extension and Training State Plan 2025-26.

She stressed that investment is essential for improving fish growth and said fish farming should be approached as a business requiring strategic investment in quality fish seed, feed and maintenance of healthy ponds.

Yanthan also encouraged greater participation of youth in aquaculture to ensure continuity and growth of fish farming activities in the district.

During the inaugural session, Neimelu Noswe sensitised the participants on the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) and the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan scheme.

The Department of Fisheries also distributed water testing kits to the participating farmers.

Village Council chairman of Beisumpuikam, Tadibe Zeliang, lauded the initiative of the Fisheries Department and thanked the DPDB Peren for adopting the village as a model village.

The training programme included technical sessions and field demonstrations conducted by resource persons C Dory Yanthan and Chubatemjen, Assistant Fisheries Inspector (AFI).

The sessions covered topics such as best practices in pond management, composite fish culture and economics of fish culture, officials said.
