Peren Forest Division conduct workshop on protection of wildlife

Peren, November 24 (MExN): The Peren Forest Division in collaboration with the Wildlife wing organised a workshop at Jalukie Forest Resource Centre on November 21.  

The special invitee, DK Zeliang IFS Retired PCCF & HoFF in his speech challenged the community and the stakeholders to enhance the economy of their livelihood through social forestry. He highlighted the economic importance of Teak plantation in the region.  

Satya Prakash Tripathi IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden, Nagaland highlighted the importance of Amur Falcon coming to Nagaland. He spoke on the importance of community reserve and encouraged the stakeholders to come forward and declared their forests as community reserve to experience the ecological benefits and also to avail the financial benefits from the Government.  

Dr. Sentitula IFS, DFO in her keynote address said that “Forest is the storehouse for all living being.” She emphasized the responsibility of human kind to work towards multiplying and replenishing the store house. She impressed upon the community that “good forest is an indicator of good living and prosperity. These forests provide all our basic needs but we should harvest these resources sustainably to meet the needs of our future generations and at the same time enhance our livelihood.”  

Every year there is an increase of Amur Falcon presence in Jalukie Valley and this year was no different, noted Obed ACF and highlighted the importance of Amur Falcons.  

Punseni Khing, Range Officer Jalukie presented the challenges faced by the protection force. The Jalukie Students Union also shared their experience their noble effort and concerns in protecting the Amur Falcon.  

Iriegwang Mpom, JFMC Old Jalukie highlighted their community seriousness and various steps taken towards protecting the forest. The Village council has declared 370 ha as Community Biodiversity Reserve and had imposed total ban on jhuming, hunting, and logging and the community involvement in restoration activities which has also become a means for providing employment to the local people.  

The programme was attended by Village council chairman, VDB secretaries, students from College of Veterinary Sciences Jalukie, Government Higher Secondary School Jalukie. Altogether 200 people attended the programme. After the programme, the Wildlife Crime Branch, Dimapur presented a live demonstration of ‘How to chase away Wild elephants and to mitigate Elephant conflict.’
