According to the MHA report, the three best police stations in the country are in Rajasthan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and West Bengal.
The Kalu PS in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district is ranked number 1 as it had all facilities such as a women’s help desk, drinking water facilities and Wi-Fi.
The second in the rank is Campbell Bay in Nicobar district. It has a child-friendly room and a separate waiting room for complainants and visitors.
The Farakka PS in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district is ranked third as it has air conditioners, gymnasium, CCTV cameras and a comfortable environment for police-public interaction.
Selection process of police stations
The process started with the selection of a set of police stations from the 15,666 police stations all over the country. It then shortlisted 3 from the states having 750+ police stations, 2 from all other states and NCT Delhi and 1 from each Union Territory.
The shortlist was done on the basis of data uploaded on the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System by each police station. The stations were evaluated on the criteria of crime against women, crimes against SC/ST and property offences.
These parameters were taken as these crimes have a pan-India character. The total weighted score was calculated depending upon the number of FIRs registered, the no of FIRs charge-sheeted and the number of FIRs charge-sheeted within 60 days under each of the above categories, the report stated.
Twenty percent weight-age was also assigned to the police station's infrastructure and citizen feedback on the performance of the police personnel posted at the police station.
The annual survey is being conducted since 2016 after it was suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grade the police stations during the annual Director General of Police conference in Gujarat.
