Peren Red Cross sounds red alert over weak Dam

Dimapur, September 18 (MExN): A red alert has been sounded by the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Peren over a possible bursting of a temporary dam at Tepuiki River, bordering Nagaland and Manipur, due to a (reported) massive landslide from Manipur side of the dam.

A press release issued by Joint Secretary of IRCS, Peren, Albert said that the temporary dam, in Tepuiki river is estimated to be 50-60 feet deep and stretching about one kilometer in length.

“Due to accumulation of very large volume of water in the weak dam, and continuing rain, there is fear of the temporary dam getting burst,” said Albert.
The Peren IRCS Joint Secretary, quoting sources in Benru village, said that the incessant rain during the past weeks has reportedly caused a massive landslide from Manipur district of Senapati, “which has completely blocked and created a large temporary dam in Tepuika river at a palve upstream below Poilwa village under Peren district.”

“According to villagers, there is fear of the paddy fields along Tepuiki river getting completely destroyed in the event of a breach in the temporary dam,” said Albert and added that such breach of the dam can pose serious threat to human lives along the villages and towns located downstream of Tepuiki and Barak rivers.

In this regard, Albert strongly suggested the dam needs the immediate attention of the concerned authority and at the same time cautioned all concerned for their own safety not to venture out in the said river until clearance is given. He cautioned anyone venturing out near the area to be extra careful and to be alert for any unusual sounds.
