Peren, November 16 (MExN):  ‘A town established on April 1, 1947 has since grown gradually with change of time,’ cited Chairman of UDA, TR Zeliang during the 75th-anniversary celebration of Peren Township on November 16 at Peren Town.

In his speech during the occasion, Zeliang said, “Though the town is not as big as other towns in the State, it is home to many other tribes who have settled here and accepted Peren as their own and lives in cordial relationship with the locals. The town population at present is a little over 10,000 who live in perfect harmony with each other.” Remarking that “Peren can be described as one of the most peaceful town in the State,” he said, “the crime rate of the town is low and the overall atmosphere of the town is peaceful and composed.”

On road development, Zeliang stated that upon completion of the ongoing construction of NH-129A Maram-Peren-Dimapur 2-Lane road, this highway will become an alternative to the NH-29. He added that the Kohima-Peren-Lekie road will add more activities to the town and open up a new window for tourism and become a significant economic corridor of the State as it will directly link neighbouring states of Assam and Manipur thus putting Peren Town at the centre.

Citing that educational institution was set up in about the same year as the establishment of the town, i.e. 1947, it played a significant role in providing the basic education to many people the district. “And staying true to this trend, the educational institutions in the town continues to cater to the needs of the people of the town and neighbouring villages with quality education,” he stated.

With the upgradation of Peren Sub-Division to a District in the year 2003, and official inauguration in the year 2004 by CM Neiphiu Rio, the need for extension of the town was felt and so the current site at New Peren was selected.

This major change faced a lot of challenges but in the end, the welfare and general interest of the District paved the way for smooth transition. With community participation, assisted well by the government machineries, the Model Town at new site can live up to its name and not before long, we will see that the stretch between this Town here and the Model Town would be populated by human settlements.

“I understand that there is an immediate requirement for good road connectivity from here to the new site as the existing road has been constructed very poorly and the gradient also is too steep and there are sinking and landslide zones,” Zeliang said.

He added, “With the help and support of the Chief Minister and my colleagues, an alternative route from here to the new site can be constructed which will not only benefit the town dwellers but also the numerous villages of the District.”

He also commended that the Jubilee Committee headed by the ADC for bringing the ‘noble concept to make our Town an Orchid Town and this is a right decision at the right time.’

Meanhwile, a DIPR report stated that Deputy Commissioner Peren & Convenor of the 75th anniversary organising committee, Vineet Kumar, IAS delivered the welcome address with keynote address by ADC & Administrator, Peren Town Council, Keyirangding Hegui, NCS.

Earlier, the dedication of 'Kemdeu Bamh' was held wherein former State Chaplain, Rev Kuzierang Thou pronounced the dedicatory prayer. Other highlights included the inauguration of ‘Naga King Chilli Fest by CM Neiphiu Rio.

In the evening session, an entertainment programme was held with a fashion parade and Dreamz Unlimited presentations.
