In a tragic incident, two 10 IR jawans were shot and killed by another jawan on the night of November 22 at Lamhainamdi village under Peren district.
The two jawans, identified as Kevisekho Khate of A/10 NAP (IR) and T Zewangba Yim of A/10 NAP (IR), were shot dead by Zaneise Yhoshu of MT Platoon (STF).
Though no official statement was released by the authorities, an official internal report accessed by this newspaper stated that Yhoshu was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.
The first hand firing report stated that the accused was arrested and taken to Jalukie Police Station for “conducting liquor test and taking legal action.” The liquor test conducted by the Medical Officer, CHC Jalukie confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol, it said.
The weapon of offence, a Government issued Insas Rifle, was seized along with 13 empty cases and 7 live rounds, the official report also stated.
The accused jawan was also examined at the Jalukie PS and his statement recorded, it added.
According to another Police source, ‘there was no independent witness.’ However, as per the information that it could gather, on that particular evening, the jawans, along with others were sitting around a fire. After a while, the others had left to go to sleep leaving the three behind. Later in the night, the other jawans were awakened by the sounds of gunshots and they came out to find that the other two jawans had been shot.
As of now, the accused has been taken into custody and a case has been filed at the Jalukie Police Station. An investigation is going on, but the motive or cause of the incident could not be ascertained.
