Peren united against drug-abuse, illicit-trafficking

Peren June 28 (MExN): Peren district on June 26 observed ‘International Day Against Drug-Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ under the theme “Drugs are not child’s play” at Jalukie Town Council Hall. The Programme was organized by TFA Project keeping in view the United Nation’s theme “Youths and Drugs” and sought to address the negative impact of drug-abuse on the lives of youths.

Gaubeu Rangkau, JTC, Chairman, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest, appealed to the youths to say no to drugs and called for active participation of the whole community towards effective implementation of drug laws to fight and eliminate the scourge of drug-abuse and addiction from the society. “A sense of moral uprightness have to be instilled on the child” he asserted and added the “It’s the weakling who are unable to fight his battles, that takes to drugs. 

Also, Major Arvind Kumar Rana, 28 Assam Rifle Jalukie speaking on the occasion, said that to curb the social menace from taking a greater toil on the society’s valuable youths today, it is the responsibility of one and all. He was in attendance as the Guest of Honor. “A few-seconds pleasure indulgence can easily wreck a person’s whole life. Too much independence given by the parents or absence of parental guidance and support to their children mostly lead the youths to take a deeper plunge in anti-social lifestyles, drugs and alcohol. Therefore, the parents, churches, NGOs, have to give their very best” added  Major Rana. 

Also speaking on the day, Adai, President, Jalukie Town Woman Welfare Society, lamented that the sacrifice they made during the recent years have not been that fruitful. Their drive against drugs, alcohol and illicit trafficking within Jalukie areas were opposed by some sections of society, she regretted. However she said that the women society would not be intimidated by such indifferent attitudes  “for every troubled child on the street is my child.” 

Other speakers also affirmed that substance-abuse and trafficking is a global problem which is increasing at an alarming rate. “To slacken and completely wipe out this multi-faceted problem, the men in uniform should also have to reaffirm their commitment and take more stringent action against offenders” asserted L David, Supervisor of Operation Salvage, Heningkunglwa. “It is very much the responsibility of all classes of people to joint hands and fight against drugs and trafficking; demand of reduction of drugs should be initiated by churches and NGOs while reduction of drug-trafficking should be maintained by the men in uniform” he further reiterated. Abel Lotha, OC, Jalukie PS, give a brief account of drug-related cases during the last 2 years. Cases have decreased marginally after the tireless effort exerted by “Operation Salvage” in the Jalukie areas. The programme was chaired by Raile Ipuing, while a musical number was presented by Rampau. Aheu Ipuing, offered the Vote of Thanks. The programme ended with a prayer by Sis. Margaret, Headmistress of St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Jalukie.
