Dimapur, March 16 (MExN): An organization in Phek’s Pfutsero, the GBs & Colony Chairmen Union of Pfutsero Town, today said they reject the 33% Reservation for Women. The reason the organization gave in a press release received here today was that “nowhere in the constitution has ever mentioned the 33% Women Reservation and this is alien to Nagas culture since time immemorial.”
“Nowhere in the constitution has ever mentioned the 33% Women Reservation and this is alien to Nagas culture since time immemorial. Customary laws reign supreme as far as Nagas are concerned,” the organization said in a press release issued by Convener Zuhuve Kezo and Head GB Punuru. “Therefore, the GBs and chairmen of all 11 wards of Pfutsero town reject implementation of 33% Women Reservation Bill in toto.”
The organization said the first Gaonburas (GBs) were appointed by the British when they came to Naga soil. “Authority along with red blankets were given to them. The GBs were empowered to oversee the time tested village administration based on Nagas own customary laws, culture, traditions and inheritance.”
Long after the British left India, the union said, the present state of Nagaland came into existence in 1963 under the Ministry of External affairs and special provisions were given to the Nagas. “The constitution of India empower the Nagas to protect and safeguard its own customary laws, culture, tradition and inheritance.”
However, the union said, “we have no objection against women candidates and qualified and capable female leaders are welcome to contest in all the 11 wards of the forthcoming Pfutsero Town Council election.”
