DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 4 (MExN): The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) conducted training for rural bodies at district levels in Kohima on October 2. The training was conducted by the PHED (Urban) Division and sponsored by the RD Department under GIA/SFA scheme.
The training was conducted in two sessions. In the first session, Er. Abinuo Peki (SDO) PHED deliberated on SBM(G) & Health and Sanitation. In her speech she said that the department had made a huge achievement by declaring Nagaland as Open Defecation Free for all rural areas way before the National Target i.e. 2019.
She said this was possible only because every citizen played their part by cooperating and taking initiative towards this goal. She also requested everyone to give opportunities so as to encourage every citizen to have water connectivity in their home because health and sanitation is applicable and possible only through proper availability of water.
In the second session, Er. P. Khetoi Awomi (EE) PHED, Kma (U) spoke on the functions of WATSAN committee & Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance and Communitization. He stated that through the Nagaland Communitization of Public institutions & Services Act 2002, communitization came into act by which local authorities are empowered for delegation of the state government functions by way of participation in matters related to local public utilities, public services such as Water Supply etc.
He also explained on how the WATSAN committee is functioned & formed. He advised the officials and staff to make proper survey and test the water quality so that the citizens will have safe and potable drinking water.
Every District has a laboratory and WATSAN Committee can approach the department laboratory in their own District HQ for water testing.
