Phek dist aims to be self-reliant in pig production by 2025: CWWS Director

Dimapur, November 9 (MExN): There is currently ban in import of fattened pigs into Phek and the district is aiming to become self- reliant in pig production by 2025,  informed Nezulu Nyekha, Director, Chakesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS). 

The director reportedly stated this during a one-day workshop on pork marketing chains organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Nagaland Centre at the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council’s Conference Hall, T Chikri, Pfütsero on November 6. 

As per a press release from the centre, Nyekha further noted such workshop is need of the hour for the farmers of the district as it works towards the target. All together 34 women farmers attended the workshop.

The workshop was organised under National Agricultural Science Fund (NASF) Project titled, “Pork Marketing Chains in North East India for Sustainable Livelihood of Tribal Women (Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland),” it said. 

According to ICAR, the workshop was organised to give an overview on pork marketing chains in Nagaland and while Julia Rova, Cluster Co- ordinator, CWWS gave an introductory session and Nungshitula Pongener, Senior Research Fellow, NASF Project-ICAR Nagaland Centre covered various issue related to the topic. 

Pongener highlighted on digital sensitisation on pig production and sales; scientific pig production; bio-security and waste management; financial market literacy; enterprise and business model; and packaging and processing methods, the release said.

Selection of cluster members for the topic digital sensitisation and financial market literacy was made on the basis of basic digital handling knowledge and their access to banking facilities and cluster members for other training categories were made on the basis of their interest and experience in rearing pigs, it informed. 

Other issues like pricing information, standardisation of pig value chain, capital literacy on credit procedure and guidelines, basic technical approaches with regard to livestock production etc aimed at to empowering women farmers were also disused, it added.
