DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 26 (MExN): The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, along with the launch of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, was observed across Nagaland on November 25 with programmes held in Zunheboto, Phek, Niuland and Meluri.
In Phek, the District Administration and SAKALP-DHEW, in collaboration with the Sakhi One Stop Centre, organised an event at the Town Council Hall. Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori, who also chairs the District Level Community under Mission Shakti, cautioned against the growing threat of digital violence, terming it more challenging than physical abuse. He urged parents to monitor children’s online activities and called for collective efforts to advance gender equality.
Guest Speaker Dr Pritpal Kaur, IPS, SP Phek, highlighted the rise in cybercrimes targeting women, noting that more than 2.5 lakh cases have been registered on the national cyber reporting portal. She urged the public to use the helpline number 1930 to report such incidents.
The programme, chaired by Vileno K Thisa, District Mission Coordinator, DHEW Phek, was attended by around 60 participants from line departments, civil society organisations, churches and NGOs. A “He For She” signature campaign was also held.
In Niuland, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme organised a programme at Nikhekhu Village with around 50 young participants. Kelengunuo Solo, EAC, delivered the keynote address and underscored the need for collective action to end violence against women.
In Meluri, the District Administration and Sakhi One Stop Centre under Mission Shakti held a programme at the DC’s Conference Hall. SDO (C) Sakuchingmak, in his keynote address, emphasised the crucial role of Mission Shakti and described churches as one of the most effective platforms for preventing violence against women.
Chiekerho Nyusou, Case Worker (Legal), delivered the thematic address covering domestic violence, digital abuse, workplace sexual harassment and legal provisions. Heads of departments, civil society organisations, village councils, student groups and church leaders attended the event. Centre Administrator Jitsiasa Nyusou chaired the programme and administered the Mission Shakti pledge.
