
Phek, October 21 (MExN): Phek district observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day with the salt traders of Phek town under the theme “Iodized Salt, Traders’ Responsibilities” on October 21.
Speaking at the programme, Dr.Vethihulu Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Phek highlighted the participants on the importance of Iodine, disorders caused by iodine deficiency, source of iodine etc. She also briefed the participants on the roles and responsibilities of salt traders basing on the theme.
Neilezo Tep SDO (civil) Phek exhorted the participants by saying that selling of iodized and quality salt is the trader’s responsibility which can prevent the community from deficiencies of iodine. He also briefed them on how to store the salt in the shop and handle it in a proper way.
At the programme salt demonstration was carried out using local made salt, Tata salt and Everyday salt by Azenuo Mere District Community Mobilizer. The salt traders further signed a pledge stating that they will not sell non-iodized salt and will follow the roles and responsibilities given to them. Leaflets and posters on iodine were handed out to all the participants.
Earlier invocation was pronounced by Reverend T. Alem Pastor, Ao Baptist Church, Phek while vote of thanks was delivered by Velato Nienu, District Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant, DAPCU.
