Phek: ‘Sports brings unity, peace and strengthen brotherhood’

Phek, January 16 (MExN): A six-day long 18th edition of Phek Town Inter Ward Tournament 2024 got underway at Phek Town on January 15 under the aegis of Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) with the theme ‘Unity Transcendence.’ 

The inaugural function was graced by Kuko Mero, Deputy Commissioner, Phek. He said that said that sports brings unity, peace and strengthen brotherhood. In this, he called upon the people to take this inter colony tournament as an opportune platform to maintain the feeling of oneness and brotherhood.

Referring to the tournament theme ‘Unity Transcendence,’ Mero, maintained that the first and foremost thing everyone must do it to change the mindset of oneself so that the essence of change would become visible.

Also stressing on the need to practice truthfulness and healthy competition in every sports discipline, he called upon the people to do away with alcoholism and substance abuse, which spoil the environment of peaceful co-existence. Further, he challenged the sportspersons not to take this (inter ward tournament) as an ending perimeter but to carry forward and bring laurel to the community in the different level.

Earlier, PTYS President Suyiengoyi Soho, delivered welcome address while administration of oath to the participating teams was done by PTYS Asstt Games & Sports Secretary Sapalu Venuh. Altogether, 11 colonies are taking part in the tournament in the discipline of Shooting, Arm wrestling, Archery, football and volleyball.

The Men football champion will be awarded Rs 1,05000, runner up Rs 84,000 and Semi finalists Rs 21,000 whereas the winners, runner up and semi finalist of both men and women category in volley ball will receive Rs 63,000, Rs 42,000 and 15750 respectively. The sponsors includes Sanjeev Sharma, Ramavtar Yadav, Babulal Yadav, Upender Saha, Kukhrote Venuh, Welhikhro Mero, Anil Sinha, Suresh Vaishnav, Jujal Sharma, Vebuno Chuzho, Zachive Rhakho, Wetezo Lohe, Kevese Lasuh, Ganesh, Kupa H Keyho, 38th Assam Riffles and Finance Committee.

On Tuesday, women volley ball Jericho-1 beat Zion ward, Zion ward beat Mission Compound ward while Hebron-1 ward beats Hebron-2 ward. In the men's football Jericho-1 ward and New ward tie with two each goals. Meanwhile, Jericho-2 ward defeated Hebron-2 ward with 3 to 1 goals. The meet will continue till January 20.
