Don’t want to expose jawans to virus, says SP

Two Check gates under Kohima district, Phesama Check gate and Peducha Check gate have temporarily ceased operation.

The Superintendent of Police, Kohima Kevithüto Sophie told The Morung Express that only inter-state checkpoints at Chümoukedima and Khuzama are in operation.

The need to temporarily suspend the checkpoints comes in the backdrop of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the state. “Besides that, we don’t want to expose our jawans by having them come in contact with the Coronavirus,” the SP said, noting that the inter-state check gates are conducting thorough checking and maintaining all safety protocols.

Sophie was of the view that “no matter how much the jawans are briefed, they would rarely comply with the Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs)” and therefore it was best felt to temporarily suspend operations.

The check gates which have been suspended for almost a week now will remain so until the spread of the virus is contained.

However, at the same time, the check gates at interstate points are doing thorough checking observing all safety measure, he assured.  “Mobile Flying Squads are kept at strategic points to check anti-social elements and attend to any emergency,” the SP added.
