Phesama Check gate not “abandoned” , but routine withdrawal Police Deptt clarify

Dimapur, July 4 (MExN): The Nagaland Police has refuted news reports in a section of the local print media that police personnel manning Phesama Check Gate abandoned the said post due to threats from underground elements after a particular incident as reported earlier.

A rejoinder from the PRO, Police Department Kohima, informed that Phesama Check Gate is not a permanent check gate like Chumukedima’s or Khuzama’s but is revived as and when felt necessary and that the flexibility is a deliberate policy of the police department with a view to check anti-social activities when it is perceived to be on the rise. “The timing of the withdrawal of the check post coinciding with a particular incident should not be misconstrued nor misinterpreted. The action of the Police Department is guided strictly by professional considerations and not influenced by threat or coercion, but by factors which has direct bearing on public order, control of crime and criminal activities” the PR office reminded.

It also clarified that the check gate was activated last year to check undesirable activities especially movement and transshipment of banned substances like Ganga, banned drugs etc., in the run-up to the Christmas/New Year season. “Phesama Check Gate was revived to address this particular problem. Having seen that check post had served its intended purpose, it was decided to withdraw it for the time-being” the PR office stated.

“Therefore to term this routine departmental act of temporarily deactivating our check post at Phesama as 'abandoning Phesama Check post' is not only erroneous but totally misleading and the innocent public may be led to draw a very wrong conclusion” the Police department reminded, with the intention of pre-empting any air of doubt and misinterpretation.

Keeping these in mind, the Police departments also appealed to the media to contact the department directly to authenticate and confirm any facts before informing the unsuspecting public through their respective newspapers.
