The Phom community in Kohima observed 70th Phom Day under the aegis of Phom Union Kohima (PUK) at Kohima Phom Baptist Church (KPBC) on June 6

June 6 is observed as Phom Day every year by Phom Nagas in remembrance of June 6, 1952 when the elders of the Phom tribe made a pledge to stop the practice of head hunting and to live in peace with one another.

In 1952, a stone pillar was erected having imprinted a vow in a monument which reads “June 6 1952, Phom Day to witness this day wherein all Phoms have pledge themselves to be peaceful and loyal to government.

The significance of Phom Day was highlighted by Nyenghong, Additional Director, Department of Agriculture, Nagaland.

Also speaking at the function, S. Yanger Angh, OSD to Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland, called upon the people to trust God so that the people can live in peace, harmony and prosper in every aspect of life.

During the function, anthem of Phom Students’ Union Kohima (PSUK) has been launched with a prayer by Rev Phomlee Van, Pastor, KPBC.

The programme was chaired by PUK vice president Imti Mokholee Phom while welcome address was delivered by PUK president Dr S Manyaü.

The occasion also witnessed scripture reading by KPBC associate pastor H. Paman Buchem, Phom Day poem recitation by Shemyung.
